The Dark Hours is a solid, well written, engrossing police procedural. It is ‘competent’ in the best sense of the word!
We are introduced to Julia Harte, a retired detective who has sought escape and solitude in the quiet and remote village in County Cork. I always enjoy novels featuring women of my own generation as the main character, portrayed not as diminished, stereotypical old ladies but vibrant characters with their intelligence intact. Julia definitely still has her wits about her, as proven when she is called out of retirement to work on a new case that bears similarities to a key case from her past, back in 1994 when she was a young detective.
Jordan is a skilled writer, good on plot, pacing, atmosphere and at creating characters that come to life on the page. While there is nothing astonishing or hugely original to note, The Dark Hours will appeal to anyone who enjoys well written police procedurals — and to anyone who enjoys novels with an older female protagonist.
Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. All my reviews are 100% honest and unbiased, regardless of how I acquire the book.
